Gardening course to be offered at food bank site

By Christopher Buckley cbuckley@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

Beginning 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Greater Washington County Food Bank in Centerville will host Gardening 101, a six-week course on consecutive Tuesday evenings.

Topics to be covered include types of garden beds, starting seeds, propagating by cuttings, vegetable do’s and don’ts, herbs and houseplants.

The classes will be held at the food bank’s Healthy Habits Training Center at the food bank. It will be taught by master gardener Carol Rebar.

The hour-long classes will be doing some hand-on activities as well as the lectures.

“The goal is to get people interested in gardening who have never gardened before and those who have gardened previously can learn a technique for their home gardens,” Jodi Gatts, director of the Healthy Habits Training Center for the Greater Washington County Food Bank.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per person per class. All money raised will benefit the Healthy Habits Training Center.

Gatts encouraged the public to keep informed about the Healthy Habits future programs at the food bank’s website of www.gwcfb.org or its Facebook page.

“We will be having gardening classes throughout the summer,” Gatts said. “We’re also planning on 32 raised beds, four-foot-by-eight-foot, on the side of the center for instructions.”

The Healthy Habits Training Center is a residential training kitchen in the food bank. There is also a classroom in the training center.

The food bank moved into a new, expansive warehouse at 909 National Pike Road in Centerville in October 2015. The food bank monitors a network of 39 food pantries, including the Valley sites of Allenport Food Pantry, Bentley Towers, California Food Pantry, Centerville Food Pantry, Charleroi Food Pantry, Coal Center Food Pantry, Donora Food Pantry, Donora Towers, Ellsworth Food Pantry, Ellsworth Parkview, Finleyville Food Pantry, Monongahela Food Pantry, Monongahela Manor, and Nathan Goff, Jr. Apartments in North Charleroi.
