New business: Miller Floors opens in Uniontown
Derrick Miller, owner/operator of Miller Floors, is bringing nearly 30 years of experience to Uniontown.
“I started doing floors in 1988,” said Miller, who uses a dustless containment system and will work within a 100-mile radius. “Any possible scenario with wood floors, I can do it.”
Miller grew up in Virginia but often visited Fayette County. His father, Harry Miller, was from Tower Hill 2 in Luzerne Township.
“I used to spend summers with my grandparents. I love the area,” said Miller.
Miller noted of his move, “I felt it was time to come back to my roots.”
Miller, who had carpentry skills, started in the flooring business by working under a craftsman in Virginia.
“He brought me in and taught me the trade. I had a knack for it,” said Miller.
In 1990, he started his own company in Franklin, Virginia. He worked throughout the Hampton Roads area, which covers Chesapeake, Suffolk, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and the surrounding areas.
Miller’s work included installing two fire-retardant, parquet dance floors on the Spirit of Norfolk cruise ship, and repairing and refinishing the gymnasium at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church and school in Virginia Beach after the building was damaged by a hurricane in 1998.
Miller does commercial work but mainly does residential work, including remodeling and new construction.
“There is pretty much nothing I can’t do with a hardwood floor,” Miller said, also noting he is certified to install all brands of laminate floors as well as luxury vinyl tile.
Miller said the dustless sanding containment system he uses eliminates dust over walls and trim so there’s no need to wipe the walls down.
He installs unfinished and pre-finished nail down floors. Custom work is available upon request. He handles inlays, borders and medallions as well as repairs.
“I can give staircases a face lift by putting in oak treads and risers,” said Miller. “Plus I sand and refinish staircases.”
Miller showed off photographs of his work, including a home where a wall was removed. Miller repaired the wood so it blended together.
“I like to fix it where you never know it was done,” said Miller. “I love the look on people’s faces when I turn a rough floor into a thing of beauty. I have a passion for it.”
Miller is licensed and insured. He stays up with trends and certifications. He is considered a master craftsman.
“I try to do the work in someone else’s house like I would do for my own house,” said Miller. “I’m meticulous about my work.”
Miller charges $4 per square foot for natural floors, which includes the dustless containment system. Stain, repairs, furniture moving and carpet removal are extra.
“I usually like to install new base shue molding on the baseboards,” said Miller. “I think it makes the floor look better. People are happy with the finished product.”
He added, “I like to use polyurethane but for people who want to go green and prefer a water-based finish, I’ll provide it on request.”
