Monessen among districts to see cost savings at CTC

MONESSEN — An increase in enrollment at the Mon Valley Career & Technical Center has led to a savings for the upcoming academic year for sending school districts, Monessen School board officials said.

According to Roberta Bergstedt, vice president of the Monessen school board, the cost of education per pupil will be $5,538 — nearly $1,000 less than last year — for students in the district.

“Thanks to some improvements that have been made to the center, enrollment has risen from 379 to 441,” said Bergstedt during the monthly meeting of the Monessen school board Tuesday. “As a result, the cost that school districts pay for each student has dropped.”

Bergstedt added that the center recently revamped the culinary arts area to create a restaurant-like atmosphere. Also, this coming year, elementary school students will be able to go on field trips to the center.

“It’s a wonderful way to expose the CTC to kids who might not have any idea what they have to offer,” said Bergstedt.

Located in Speers, the Mon Valley Career & Technology Center serves the Beth-Center, California, Charleroi, Monessen and Ringgold school districts.

Also, during the meeting, the board:

n Authorized the filing of an appeal by the district regarding the reassessment of real estate property located at 11 Eastgate Ave. in Monessen.

n Accepted a one-year proposal from Snapshot 47 Photos to provide photography services for the 2018-19 school year.
