Concert will benefit proposed Brownsville Area Military Honor Roll
A concert by Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers on March 10 at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown will benefit the proposed Brownsville Area Military Honor Roll.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the theater, located at 27 E. Main St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are on sale through the theater or from committee members.
The Pittsburgh-based rock band, which has been around since 1979, notes on its website, “A Rolling Stone review once echoed the words “They are up there with Springsteen, Petty and Seger.”‘
The Houserockers also noted on their website, “We are excited to return to Uniontown for a theater show and invite all our old friends to join us for this worthy cause.”
Eadi Zetty, a committee member, explained Brownsville businessman Chip Giannetti is underwriting the concert so all proceeds go towards the new honor roll, which is proposed to be built in downtown Brownsville in the community park in Snowden Square, opposite Brownsville Free Public Library.
“There used to be five honor rolls, divided among the five election wards. Over the years, they were dismantled or fell into disrepair. There’s only one now but it’s on private property,” explained Zetty.
Work on creating a new honor roll began in late 2015. Dennis Falsetto serves as committee chairman. Fundraisers so far have generated about $10,000 of the estimated $34,000 needed for construction.
The proposed honor roll, which will occupy a 50-foot by 50-foot space, is dedicated to local heroes who served in the military. It will feature five upright monuments engraved with names of local service members from within the Brownsville Area School District who were killed in action or missing in action from World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and war in the Middle East.
Surrounding these will be a walkway of bricks engraved with any U.S. service member’s name, rank, branch of the military and years of service. Bricks can be purchased to honor any individual service member, living or deceased.
“The bricks are available to anyone who served in the military. You don’t have to serve in combat or be from the Brownsville area. If you want to place a brick for someone, it can be to any service member living or deceased,” said Zetty.
The committee is also asking the public to contribute any information they have on local service members killed in action or missing in action in U.S. conflicts.
Zetty said benches will be installed between the monuments and a flagpole erected in the center will fly the American, POW and MIA flags.
“The community has been very supportive and patient,” said Zetty of fundraising efforts.
