Frazier School District mulling over busing issues
PERRYOPOLIS — Frazier School District created two bus duty positions to monitor elementary school students in the afternoon while it determines how to address busing issues.
Dr. Bill Henderson, superintendent, said the district has had several buses running later than normal during the afternoon run to start the school year after the district eliminated two buses over the summer as a cost cutting measure.
As district buses first pick up students from the high school and transport them home before returning to campus for a second run for the primary students, the reduction in the number of buses has left some with longer routes and a later time returning to the school, said Henderson.
Henderson said one of the eliminated buses has been added back into the rotation but issues are still occurring that district administrators need to solve to get kids home in a timely manner.
Frazier Elementary School Principal Kelly Muic Lombard said two teachers would be needed to watch over students in the afternoon for an additional 15-30 minutes as five buses don’t arrive back to the campus from the secondary run until after 3:30 p.m.
Henderson said administrators are looking at a few options to remedy the issue, including adjusting dismissal times and altering bus routes.
According to Henderson, the contracted hourly rate of pay for each bus duty position is $26.66.
