Monessen School District to purchase new van

By Mark Soroka for The 1 min read

The Monessen City School District upgraded its ability to transport special education students and life skills students.

On Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to purchase a 2020 Ford Transit van through the COSTARS program. According to Superintendent Dr. Leanne Spazak, the district will only have to spend $1,500 for the van because $35,000 in ACCESS funding will be available from the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit.

The van will be used to transport special education students to outside specialized education services and transport life skills students to community events and educational trips.

In other business, the board voted to reschedule its reorganization meeting from Dec. 2 to Dec. 3. The meeting will start at 5 p.m. Dr. Spazak said the meeting was scheduled because the district will not have classes on Dec. 2.

In addition, the board hired Mia Emiliani as girls varsity head softball coach, Frank DeMarco as a part-time van driver and Ellen Gustafson as a temporary homebound instructor.
