Just in time for Halloween, the Friends of Fort Necessity are welcoming back literary historian Rob Velella to portray Edgar Allan Poe, a 19th-century author known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, at Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Wharton Township.

Tickets are limited and selling fast for Velella’s appearance at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26 in the Fort Necessity visitors center. A 4 p.m. appearance at the tavern has already sold out.

“It’s a good program for us. Everybody has an interest in Edgar Allen Poe, especially this time of year,” said Debbie Miller, president of Friends of Fort Necessity.

Tickets for the 6 p.m. performance are $15. But Miller noted people can buy a discounted ticket for $12 by joining the Friends of Fort Necessity. Discounted tickets are available for student groups at $10 per student.

Ticket holders may check in at the visitors center as early as 5:30 p.m., but general seating will not open until 5:45 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at www.eventbrite.com by doing a search for Edgar Allen Poe at Fort Necessity.

Recommended age for the program is 13 and up. Tickets will be sold online through 3 p.m. Oct. 26 as long as space is available. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are non-refundable.

An independent literary historian and playwright who specializes in 19th century American literature, Velella, of Monroeville, will read a combination of Poe’s well-known and lesser-known works. Poe will also explain his reasons for writing the way he did and take questions from those in attendance. Photographs are welcome.

For more information, email FriendsOfFortNecessity@yahoo.com. Fort Necessity is located 11 miles east of Uniontown on Route 40, the National Road.
