Seventh grade student Brittany Tekel considers who will get her vote as part of the mock election held at Carmichael Area Middle School.

Students at Carmichaels Area Middle School are participating in a national mock election throughout the week.

Sponsored by Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI), a national civic education program based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, the mock election gives students the opportunity to cast a ballot through an online voting system.

“It is a wonderful thing to see middle school students become politically engaged at their age,” said Michael Gulino, a seventh grade teacher at the middle school. “We are preparing students to become lifelong, informed citizens who will participate in future elections.”

Results of the YLI National Mock Election will be available the morning of Monday, Nov. 4.
