LBI names George R. Smalley, Inc. scholarship recipient
Laurel Business Institute in Uniontown has named Mayla Berrios the first recipient of the George R. Smalley Inc. Co. scholarship, which supports students in the school’s electrical technician program.
“Growing up my father has always worked in the power plants, and I have always been fascinated by the work he does,” says Berrios, who is in her final semester of the program. “He always came home from work and told me stories and showed me pictures of his day to day job.”
That sparked her interest in learning how to run and maintain a power plant, she said.
“As I got older, I wondered if I could actually do this as a female, but as I continue through schooling with determination and hardwork I know that I definitely can,” she said.
The scholarship is available to students through the Premier Employer Partnership between Laurel and George R. Smalley Co., Inc.
