PERRYOPOLIS — The Frazier School Board hired a head football coach for the 2019-20 school year.
On a split vote, the board Monday hired Greg Boggs to fill the vacant position.
Boggs, a former collegiate player at California University of Pennsylvania and veteran coach at the youth, high school and college level, replaces Mike Steeber, who resigned from the post last month.
The first-time head coach said he is excited for the opportunity.
“The goal right now is to get the kids into the weight room and to build our strength and conditioning program,” said Boggs. “We want to get the kids back to playing together as a team. I’m hoping we can have fun playing football. It’s always more fun when you win, (but) you have to prepare to win.”
Coaching opportunities have followed Boggs throughout his teaching career, with stints at Keystone Oaks, Chartiers Valley, Bentworth and Charleroi Area high schools. He also spent two years at Cal U as a defensive backs coach.
Most recently, Boggs has coached in the Belle Vernon youth football program and as an assistant coach at Belle Vernon Area Middle School.
School board president Tom Shetterly said final consideration for the position was given to two candidates -- Boggs and another individual -- both of whom are highly qualified and came highly recommended, he said.
Directors Tracy Angelo, Jill Devine, Jason Erdely, Stacey Erdely, Shetterly and Lisa Strickler voted for Boggs’ hiring. Vicki Olexa, Brian Secrest and Deborah Vargo Alekson opposed the move.
“Change is tough,” Boggs said following Monday's meeting. “You’ve got some kids that wanted one coach, some that wanted another coach. It’s tough right now, but I think change is a good thing in the long run.”
Frazier, which competes in the WPIAL Class 2A Interstate Conference, finished 4-6 in the 2018-19 season, narrowly missing a playoff berth.
Boggs is a former wresting coach at Frazier, stepping aside from the head coaching position in 2017 after founding the district's wresting program in 2010.
He is a resident of Frazier School District and a teacher in the Belle Vernon Area School District.
