Throughout March, designated Bleeding Disorders Month, Vitalant is shining a light on the need for blood donations.

The nonprofit organization, which provides blood to hospitals and patients across the country, issued a reminder to existing and potential donors that blood donations are not only valuable for emergencies, but also for patients prior to surgeries or those who have ongoing needs.

Eligible donors of all blood types, especially Type O, are urged to give to ensure the blood supply is sufficient. To encourage donations, those who give blood between March 3 and 16 will receive an email to claim free solar eclipse glasses and a T-shirt. Those who donate between March 3 and 31 will be entered to win one of four $5,000 gift cards to assist in viewing the April 8 total eclipse from the location of their choice.

A number of local blood drives are taking place in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties throughout the next two months. Donors can schedule an appointment at vitalant.org or through the Vitalant app.
