An off-duty state trooper with the Uniontown barracks was arrested Sunday morning after he allegedly broke into a home and assaulted a man.

James Terrance Stevenson Jr., 29, of Connellsville, is charged by state police in Waynesburg with felonies of aggravated assault and burglary.

According to the criminal complaint, at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday Stevenson broke into a home in the 1000 block of Oak Street, Connellsville and assaulted Neil Gray Jr. in his bedroom. Court documents accuse Stevenson of beating him to the point he lost consciousness.

According to police, a woman was also in the room with Gray. Stevenson allegedly grabbed her by the shoulders, shook her and told her to leave with him.

As Stevenson attempted to drive away from the scene, Gray’s father reached through the driver’s side window to grab him, police said. Court records state that Stevenson opened the door, causing him to fall to the ground.

Gray was transported to Highlands Hospital. According to the complaint, he suffered multiple injuries to his face.

State police issued a press release Tuesday stating that Stevenson has been suspended without pay. Police said he is free after posting $20,000 bail.

Stevenson also faces a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and multiple citations for harassment and criminal mischief.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 4.
