Cast-iron bridge to nowhere

The historic cast-iron bridge in Brownsville is easily visible once again as construction crews have removed various structures around the span as part of the $9 million rehabilitation project. Crews are in the process of removing the 185-year-old bridge that carries traffic on Market Street over Dunlap Creek to eventually rehabilitate and reassemble in order to preserve the span, which is expected to reopen to motor vehicles next year. The structure was the first cast-iron metal arch bridge built in the United States when it opened to travelers on the National Road in 1839.
