Waynesburg University earns PAC win over Geneva

Waynesburg University women’s basketball team avenged an early-season loss to Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Geneva on Saturday in an 83-71 victory at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets outscored the Golden Tornadoes, 14-2, over the final 5:24 to improve to 5-8 in PAC action and 10-8 overall. Waynesburg made eight of 10 free throws down the stretch.
The Yellow Jackets’ Kalista Friday scored a team-high 20 points. She pulled down eight rebounds and had three steals. Teammate Kara McFadden put in 15 points.
Waynesburg’s Julz Mohrbacher was 12 of 18 at the foul line, and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Tori Wesolowski added 10 points.
Geneva’s Emily Garvin led the game in scoring with 33 points. She had 15 rebounds for a double-double.
Edinboro 80, California (Pa.) 79 — The Vulcans weren’t able to convert what would have been the game-winning shot in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West setback to the Fighting Scots at Edinboro.
California dropped to 6-6 in league play and 10-9 overall.
Vulcan senior Allycia Harris scored 18 points on 50-percent shooting from the field, and pulled down five rebounds. She had four assists and two steals. Teammate Alicia Young put in 16 points and four rebounds.
California seniors Talia Gilliard and Iyahnna Williams were both in double figures with 13 points.
Penn State Beaver 96, Penn State Fayette 47 — Beaver had a 16-point lead after the first quarter and cruised to a Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) victory on Saturday at Penn State Beaver.
Carmichaels graduate Sophia Zalar led Fayette in scoring with 14 points. She pulled down 16 rebounds for a double-double. Teammate Hannah Crammer added 10 points.
Penn State Beaver’s Claudia Siegfried led the game in scoring with 21 points. She made five 3-pointers.
Men’s basketball
Penn State Fayette 81, Penn State Beaver 80 — Dasilas Jones scored a game-high 30 points, and Fayette needed every one of his points in a Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) win on Saturday at Penn State Beaver.
Jones was 12 of 20 from the field, including 1 for 4 from three-point range. He was 5 of 6 at the foul line and pulled down nine rebounds.
Fayette’s Jesse Lawson Jr. put in 14 points, and teammate Jack Taylor had 10. Zachary Hill came off the bench and dropped 13 for the visitors.
Alex Green led Beaver in scoring with 20 points. Teammates Ny’zir Dix (15), Trevor Franklin (15) and Jermaine Knaff (10) were also in double figures.
Fayette improved to 4-5 in conference play and 5-12 overall. Beaver dropped to 5-5 in league play and 7-11 overall.
Geneva 64, Waynesburg 63 — Ryan Rachic drained a baseline jumper with two seconds remaining in the Golden Tornadoes’ triumph over the Yellow Jackets in PAC play at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Geneva (8-9, 6-6 PAC) and Waynesburg (7-11, 5-8 PAC) split the season series.
The Yellow Jackets held a 61-52 lead with three minutes remaining before the Golden Tornadoes rallied.
Waynesburg led by seven with 1:42 left, but Geneva’s Nick Million made back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to one with 43 seconds left.
The Golden Tornadoes pulled down a rebound after the Yellow Jackets missed a three-pointer to set the stage for Rachic, who converted on a fallaway under intense pressure in the left corner.
Waynesburg’s Antone Baker scored 19 points. Teammate Korey Mitchum had a season-high 17 points, in addition to six rebounds. The Yellow Jackets’ PJ Suggs put in 12 and Rayshod Hooper pulled down 10 rebounds.
Edinboro 93, California 85 — The Fighting Scots snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Vulcans in Saturday’s PSAC West contest at Edinboro.
California junior Donald Whitehead Jr. shared team-high scoring honors with Cam Polak, as both put in 21 points. Whitehead dished out six assists in reaching 20 points for the third time in four games.
Polak has scored a minimum of 20 points i eight of the last nine contests.
The Vulcans’ Jordyn Buchanan had 19 points and six rebounds.
California’s Keondre DeShields, a Laurel Highlands graduate, put in 12 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of play off the bench.
