A U.S. postal inspector general said there is no estimated date for when the Vanderbilt Post Office will again serve customers.

“There was significant damage to the building, and there is no date of reopening,” said David Gealey from the USPS Pittsburgh Division Headquarters.

The building faced severe damage after a Dodge Ram truck plowed into the post office on Liberty Street at about 1:30 a.m on April 15, leaving a gaping hole in the front of the building and knocking down a blue postal drop box in front of the building.

Several witnesses reported that the driver of the truck – who has not been identified or apprehended – appeared to be fleeing from police on Leisenring Vanderbilt Road.

Before hitting the post office, the driver hit a fence and parked vehicles on Walnut Street.

On Monday, a state police spokesperson said the investigation is still ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Residents who used the Vanderbilt post office have been directed to use the post office in Dawson, located at 101 Railroad St, Dawson. That post office in Dawson is open from 8 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
