County to begin search for open commissioner seat

Those interested in being the county’s next Republican commissioner have until this Friday at noon to submit an application for the post.
Last Friday, Commissioner Dave Lohr, 68, of Connellsville, resigned his seat with two years left in his term, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
On Tuesday, Commissioners Vincent Vicites and Scott Dunn outlined the process to fill Lohr’s seat.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen who is qualified to vote, must have lived in Fayette County for at least one year, and must have been registered as a Republican since Nov. 7, 2023. Since Lohr is a Republican, the seat must be filled by someone with the same political affiliation.
After reviewing the candidates, President Judge Steve P. Leskinen will name Lohr’s replacement.
On Thursday, Vicites and Dunn will vote to formally accept Lohr’s resignation.
“It’s more of a formality, but a necessary one,” solicitor Jack Purcell said.
Candidates are asked to hand-deliver their cover letters, resumes and signed recommendations by Friday at noon to the office of the court administrator located on the third floor of the county courthouse.
Per the county code, there is not a timetable for when Leskinen will name Lohr’s successor.
While the decision on who will replace Lohr is solely at Leskinen’s discretion, Dunn said he hopes whomever is selected is ready to “get to work.”
Dunn, the other Republican on the board, wished Lohr a happy retirement.
“This is a very difficult job. It’s a very stressful job, and I wish him well,” he said after Tuesday’s agenda meeting.
Candidates are asked to be available for an interview with the Leskinen at any “reasonable time.” The guidelines also noted that all written submissions are public records and available upon request.
