Movie theater selects winners in24th annual Academy Awards Contest

By Cindy Ekas-Brown 3 min read

Only one Herald-Standard reader was lucky enough to select the winning films and stars in all six categories in the 24th annual Herald-Standard/Carmike Cinemas Academy Awards Contest. The first-place winner of the contest was Scott Bush of 207 Braddock Ave., Uniontown, according to Jennifer Sepic, assistant manager of the Carmike Cinema 6 at the Uniontown Mall.

As the first-place winner, Bush will receive a $100 check from the Herald-Standard and 50 “trip tickets,” each good for one single movie admission at either the Cinema 6 at the Uniontown Mall or the Cinemas IV at the Laurel Mall.

Sepic said the theater received a total of 443 contest entries. After employees determined that Bush had won the contest, theater employees sorted through the remaining ballots. They discovered that 28 Herald-Standard readers had managed to answer five of the six ballot questions correctly.

Theater employees then conducted a random drawing to determine the second-place and third-place winners, Sepic said.

The second-place winner was Travis Meadows of 59 Springer Ave., Uniontown. Meadows will receive a $50 check from the Herald-Standard and 40 trip tickets that can be used at the two movie theaters.

Gerry Kacmar of 267 New Salem Road, Uniontown, was declared the third-place winner. Kacmar will be awarded a $25 check from the Herald-Standard and 30 trip tickets that can be used at the two theaters.

The prizes will be awarded to the three winners during a party at the Carmike Cinema 6 at the Uniontown Mall, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 12. The winners will have their photograph taken by the Herald-Standard and will then have an opportunity to watch a movie of their choice with one guest. The winners will also receive a free large drink and a free large popcorn provided by the Carmike Cinema 6.

Sepic said this year’s contest was unusual because there was only one Herald-Standard reader, who answered the questions correctly in all six categories. In the past, there have been times when the first-place winner had to be declared through a lottery because several readers answered all of the questions correctly.

“From what we saw when we sorted through the ballots, it seemed like a lot of people missed the best actor, best actress and best supporting actor categories this year because there were some surprises,” Sepic said. “Most people thought Russell Crowe was going to win for best actor, but he didn’t. I think people were surprised that Halle Berry won for best actress because they expected Sissy Spacek or Nicole Kidman to win.”

Winners, who would like more information about the party, should call the theater at 724-439-2962.
