Nemacolin Castle to celebrate National Road Festival

BROWNSVILLE – Nemacolin Castle, which is located on Front Street in Brownsville, will celebrate the National Road Festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19. Castle tours will be conducted both days, beginning at 11 a.m.

Ghost tours will be offered from 7 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

Tour guides will tell visitors stories of ghostly activity within the castle while they talk them on a candlelight tour of the castle. Visitors will also have a chance to meet and talk with some of the paranormal research team members who studied the castle. This will mark the last time the ghost tours will be offered until October.

At noon on Saturday, May 18, the outdoor festivities will begin with the flag-raising ceremony by the American Legion Post 295. Other entertainment for the day includes a variety of entertainment on the outdoor stage featuring the High Ryder Band.

Sunday, May 19, will begin with a community church service at 11 a.m. There will be a variety of entertainment on the outdoor stage featuring the High Ryder Band.

Knap’s Battery, a Civil War artillery unit, will be on the grounds both days with a full-size Civil War cannon. The group will give informational talks and will present firing demonstrations.

The Virginia Militia, an historic military encampment, will be set up on the grounds both days with demonstrations and a first-hand look at life in early Pennsylvania.

There will also be blacksmith demonstrations and architectural demonstrations as well as arts and crafts and a variety of food prepared by local organizations.

The cost for the castle tours is $6 for adults and $3 for children age 12 and under.

There is no charge for the entertainment on the castle grounds or for the parking. There is also a shuttle bus available to transport visitors to other interesting and historical sites in the Brownsville area.
