‘The Sound of Music’ to fill Grand Theater in Elizabeth
ELIZABETH – Premiere Entertainment will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning “The Sound of Music” for five performances Friday through Sunday, Aug. 23-25 and Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30-31, at the Grand Theater in Elizabeth. Curtain time will be Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. For reservations, call the theater at 412-384-0504. Groups are welcome and should reserve seats as soon as possible. Groups and individuals may have dinner theater with the Red Lion restaurant, which is located next door to the theater.
Maria, the heroin of “The Sound of Music,” is a postulant at an Austrian abbey as the musical begins. Happy, young and well liked, she is nevertheless in difficulty at the abbey. It seems that Maria can’t control her desire to sing. The young postulant is sent to the home of Captain von Trapp, a widower, to act as governess for his seven children. Captain von Trapp soon falls in love with her. They marry and the family joyously welcomes Maria and her love for singing. When the Trapp family is forced to leave Austria to escape the Nazis, it is singing that enables them to earn a living and a worldwide reputation in their new life. Call 412-384-0504.
The score includes eight songs, which have become part of American culture. They are “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “Maria,” “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “So Long Farewell” and “Edelweiss.”
