Eighth annual Country Fest scheduled for Garrett County
McHENRY, Md. – The eighth annual Country Fest and Auction will be held from 8 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Garrett County Fairgrounds in McHenry, Md. This family-oriented one-day event is sponsored by the Dry Run Mennonite Church and provides a mix of demonstrations, crafts, children’s activities, baked goods, gospel music and an auction.
The auction, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will include Amish-made furniture, home d’cor accents, meal tickets for an “in-home dinner” with a local Mennonite family, American traditions baskets and Apple Valley dolls.
As always, quilts will be a main item at the auction. Twenty-one locally made hand-quilted full, queen, or king-sized quilts plus many smaller quilted items will be on full display until 12:30 p.m., when they will be taken down and moved to the auction to be sold, beginning at 1 p.m.
Demonstrations such as quilting, basket weaving, apple cider pressing, homemade ice cream churning, milking and butter churning was given throughout the day.
For the young and young of heart there will be rides – horse and buggy, horse and carriage, pony, hay and the “barrels of fun.” For children, there will be a live animal petting zoo, a pedal tractor pull and an aerial candy drop along with children’s videos.
The Voice of Praise Men’s Quartet of Gladys, Va., will be back again this year.
They will be singing in the auction building from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and then at intervals during the day by the chicken barbecue pavilion.
Booths featuring quality woodcrafts, home-baked goods, homemade noodles, jams, discounted books from the “choice books” racks and a gift and card shop will open at 8 a.m. and provide a wide variety of items for sale.
There are no vendors, and nothing is sold on consignment. Proceeds from this event are used for the building program of the Dry Run Mennonite Church and School and for Christian Aid Ministries, a Mennonite relief organization that ministers to the physical and spiritual needs of needy people around the world.
