The search begins for Miss Uniontown
The search is on for one lucky woman, who will wear the crown on her head and claim the title of Miss Uniontown. Young women will walk across the stage at the Uniontown Senior High School at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, as they compete for the coveted title.
Debra L. Bortz, pageant director, said she is currently seeking contestants for the non-profit pageant, which will require a minimum of 35 young women. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Belmont Inn’s multiple sclerosis (MS) campaign.
The application qualifications are as follows:
– Young women must be between the ages of 16 to 21.
– They must be residents of Uniontown or live within the boundaries of the Uniontown Area or Laurel Highlands school districts.
– They must be single women, who have never been married.
– Contestants must be high school students or have a minimum high school diploma or equivalency.
– They are required to submit a one-page resume.
– Contestants are required to wear business/professional and formal attire during the competition.
– No talent will be required.
– They must pay an entry fee of $35, which is non-refundable.
– The contestants must obtain $225 in sponsor ads.
– Entries must be submitted by the Monday, Sept. 16, deadline.
Bortz said prize money, trophies, sashes and flowers will be awarded to the queen and runners-up.
The queen will represent the city of Uniontown for one year at required events. Contestants will be judged on beauty, poise, appearance, personality, dress and communication skills, which will be determined through an interview process. Contestants will be interviewed by all three judges.
Bortz said a Miss Congeniality will be chosen by her peers.
Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance at a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children age 16 and under. Tickets at the door will be $6 for adults and $4 for children.
Bortz explained that the Miss Uniontown Pageant is not affiliated with any other pageants, including the Miss Pennsylvania/Miss U.S.A. and the Miss Pennsylvania/Miss America Pageant.
However, Bortz said the pageant will give local women a chance for exposure and an opportunity to build the self-confidence that they will need to compete in future events. If she does not receive a minimum of 35 candidates for the pageant, Bortz said she will be forced to cancel the event.
