Carnegie to present lecture about ecological issues

1 min read

PITTSBURGH – Can depleting seafood resources place disaster on the planet’s menu? Bill DeWalt, director of Carnegie Museum of Natural History, will share thoughts on how we may continue to eat shrimp cocktail and scampi without causing harm to the environment at a free lecture entitled “Shrimp and People: Fishing for Solutions.” The talk will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Carnegie Lecture Hall. Call 412-622-3131 for more information.

In his research work and while serving as a consultant for the World Wildlife Fund and the World Bank, DeWalt focused on finding solutions for the ecological and social issues that affect shrimp farming in Latin America. He will discuss how a balance might be achieved between harvesting food from the sea and protecting the environment.

The lecture is part of Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Biodiversity Summer 2002 program, which is being made possible locally by funding from The Heinz Endowments and Eat ‘n Park Hospitality Group and Parkhurst Dining Services.
