Center for Performing Arts presents ‘The Music Man’

2 min read

The Center for Performing Arts in Carmichaels youth theatre program will present the popular Broadway musical “The Music Man” Friday through Sunday at Uniontown’s State Theatre Center for the Arts. Meredith Wilson’s story follows the happenings in the small Iowa town River City in the early 1900’s. Scheming salesman Harold Hill convinces the River City town leaders that they’re in need of a boy’s band in order to keep their youth from being led to the corruption by the influences of the town’s new pool table. Hill’s only hurtle seems to be River City’s piano teacher and librarian Marion Paroo, who sees through his swindling plan and tries to convince the mayor of Hill’s true intentions.

Love, however, conquers all as Hill and Paroo find themselves inexplicably attracted to each other, while the town is forever altered by Hill’s influence. With popular ballads including “Goodnight My Someone,” “My White Knight,” and “Lida Rose,” as well as the fast-paced showstoppers “76 Trombones,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon” and “Shipoopi,” “The Music Man” is a joy for the entire family.

The cast of this production consists of approximately 60 young people from 4 to 18 years of age from Uniontown, Connellsville, California, Masontown, Belle Vernon, Carmichaels, Jefferson and Waynesburg, all of whom are students of musical theatre at the Center for the Performing Arts. Leading the cast are Waynesburg’s Adam Behm as Harold Hill, and Norrell Moore as Marion Paroo, Uniontown’s Anthony Galino as Marcellus Washburn and Carmichael’s Cody Andrews as Mayor Shinn and Paige Sholsky as Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn. The Music Man is produced and choreographed by Susan Zalar, directed by Toby Maykuth with musical direction by Matt Komula.

Show times are Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased by calling 724-966-5005.
