Well-known singer, songwriter to play at outdoor concert in Uniontown

3 min read

Well-known singer, songwriter and guitarist David Allan Coe will play during an outdoor concert scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, at Mahoney’s Bar, 58 E. Fayette St., Uniontown. Local band Ruff Creek will be the opening act for Coe, who is expected to take the stage at about 9 p.m.

Coe, who has spent the past three decades following his musical instincts, has an ability to defy categorization, according to a press release.

In addition to a singer, songwriter and guitarist, Coe is also a magician, deep-sea treasure hunter and an actor.

His movie credits include “Stagecoach,” “The Last days of Frank and Jessie James,” “Lady Grey,” “Buckstone County Prison” and “Take This Job and Shove It,” according to information provided in a press release.

Coe signed with Sun Records in 1968 and recorded his first album “Penitentiary Blue,” all songs he wrote while he was in prison.

In 1973, Columbia Records bought Coe’s contract from Sun, and he recorded his first album “The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy” several years before Glen Campbell had a hit with the song, “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

Much has been written about Coe’s past and his lifestyle but not much information has been released about his achievements during the years.

From performing on Farm Aid to touring with Neil Young, Kid Rock and Willie Nelson, Coe’s song “Take This Job and Shove It” has received a million airplays certificate from BMI.

His greatest hits album is platinum and his first 10 years album is gold.

Coe has had 63 songs on the Billboard singles charts, including “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile,” “The Ride,” “Please Come to Boston,” “Willie, Waylon and Me,” “Jack Daniels If You Please” and “You Never Call Me By My Name.”

He has written songs for Johnny PayCheck, Tanya Tucker, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Charles Louvin, Del Reeves, Tammy Wynette, Melba Montgomery, Stoney Edward, The Oakridge Boys and Kid Rock.

“Would You Lay With Me” and “Take This Job and Shove It” are million-seller songs written by Coe. Johnny Cash recorded Coe’s song “Would You Lay With Me” on his current chart-topping album, “Cash.”

Coe’s tour schedule is a never-ending list of sold-out shows.

He performs both country and rock shows, depending on the venue.

Coe also plays in many casinos where he does a Las Vegas-type show.

Although Coe has been through a lot in his life, he has tried to put his past behind him and move on with his life.

He is a single father with his oldest son, Tyler, traveling with him on the road where he is home-schooled.

His youngest son, Carson, and his two daughters, Tanya and Shyanne live with their mother.

His oldest daughter, Shelly, a singer-songwriter, is married and lives in Austin, Texas, and is the mother of Coe’s grandchildren.

His newest album is on Cleveland International Records.

The album is called “Songwriter of the Tear.”

It includes all songs written by Coe, including “The Penny,” “Drink Canada Dry,” “The Ghost of Hank Williams,” “Then I Found You,” “Standing Too Close to the Flame,” “The Only Thing Missing Is You,” “Desperate Man” and others.

Coe is currently working on an album with Pantera and Kid Rock, which is expected to be released sometime this summer.
