Idlewild Park to kick off new season on Saturday

LIGONIER – The nations’ third oldest amusement park, which will celebrate 125 years this weekend, is ready to open. This year’s opening day is Saturday. Guests who visit Idlewild on Opening Day will have a unique opportunity. They may purchase up to 50 2002 FunDay tickets for only $11.95 each, which is an $8 savings. Discount tickets may only be purchased by paying guests at the park on Saturday.

Idlewild’s Main Stage is the setting for the annual Opening Day Banana Split Contest. At 3 p.m., contestants compete for prizes by building and then eating banana splits. The banana split was invented in 1904 right around the theme park’s corner at Strickler’s Drug Store in Latrobe. Gates open at 10 a.m.

A FunDay Pass, which costs $19.95 for adults and $14 for senior citizens, permits guests to enjoy every area in the park.

including Storybook Forest, Raccoon Lagoon, Jumpin’ Jungle, Olde Idlewild, Hootin’ Holler’, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood of Make-Believe and the area’s wettest and wildest waterpark – Soak Zone.

Idlewild & Soak Zone will be open this Saturday; Saturday, May 18; and Memorial Day weekend, which is Saturday through Monday, May 25-27.

Daily operation for 2002 begins on Thursday, May 30, and ends Monday, Sept. 2.

Idlewild is closed Mondays (except holidays) and Aug. 26-30.
