Albert Gallatin Regatta to float down Mon River to Point Marion

POINT MARION – The 23rd annual Albert Gallatin Regatta will be held Saturday and Sunday along the banks of the Monongahela River in Point Marion. A parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It will feature bands, fire trucks, floats and beauty queens. Any organization that would like to participate in the parade is asked to call Margaret Novacich at 714-715-3498.

The 5K walk or 5K run will start at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday regardless of weather conditions.

Race day registration will take place from 5 to 6:15 p.m. at the Point Marion Community Park. Registration, awards and post race refreshments will be held in the pavilion near the entrance to the park.

The course is a fairly flat scenic stretch along the Monongahela River.

However, there is no guarantee of T-shirts for late and race day registration.

Professional timing and finish line results will be provided by SERJ Timing Service. Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female finishers in the 5K run in the following age groups: 14 and under; 15 to 19; 20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 59; and 60 and older.

Awards will also be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers in the 5K walk in the following age groups: 19 & under; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 and older. Walkers must abide by sanctioned race walking rules. The course will be monitored for compliance.

The entry fee is $15. Make checks payable to Albert Gallatin 5K.

The Dream Machines Car Club of Morgantown, W.Va., will present the Albert Gallatin Regatta Care, Truck & Motorcycle Show 2002 on Sunday. The rain date is Monday. The fee is $10.

A total of 200 dash plaques will be awarded. Registration begins at 10 a.m., the show starts at 1 p.m. and judging will take place at 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Call John Stone at 304-594-2439 or John Enoch at 304-599-9115 for more information.

Vendors are encouraged to set up shop in the Point Marion Park at the end of Main Street.

In the past, many types of ethnic food as well as hot dogs and hamburgers have been offered. Local churches and organizations will have an opportunity to place information booths and/or refreshment tables.

As in past years, the regatta will end with a “bang” as the Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department will set off the spectacular fireworks display. The Point Marion Rotary Club sponsors the regatta each year, and many volunteers participate in the activities.
