CALIFORNIA – The “Special Summer Expanding Horizons 2002” classes at the Center In The Woods in California will offer learning opportunities, cultural experiences and field trips for people of all ages from June 17 to Aug. 23. These learning opportunities are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening, depending on the class at various registration costs. A general registration will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the center where each registrant will be given a ticket to the waffle buffet. As some of the classes fill up quickly, this early registration can guarantee a place in the class.

The learning opportunities available include basic dog obedience; basic faux painting; Civil War light artillery/an introduction; cooking workshop taught by an award-winning chef; dwarf/slow growing trees for the garden; ecology and the 1948 Donora smog; “George Washington: the Man Behind the Myth;” hatha yoga; herbs for fun and profit; and introduction to learning the personal computer.

Also offered are introduction to vocal singing; local historic gems-day tour; “Live To Ride/Ride To Live” (Harley Davidson and The American Infatuation with It); magnolias primer; mosaic design; Pittsburgh day tour with a Slovak touch; plant propagation for the outdoors; Polish customs; and introduction and advanced seed sowing in the summer and fall.

Additional classes include stained glass workshop; Those Amazing Irish Americans; truly low care plants for interiors; water color painting; water ponds; “What’s Wrong With Your Lawn?” and “What the Heck is That: Scary Noises and Other Car Stuff Everyone Should Know.”

Through our expanding horizons program, we try to offer things that will do that for everyone,” said Mary Elaine Lozosky, program coordinator. This multi-faceted educational program is made possible by a grant provided by the United Way of Washington County.

For more information about any of the classes, call Lozosky at the center at 724-938-3554.
