The Point Marion Lions Club will sponsor a “Music Jamboree” every second Saturday of each month at the skating rink in Point Marion. Open stage will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. with two main events to follow from 7 to 9:45 p.m. The event will feature live music, including country, pop and gospel provided by local people and groups. The second annual Tri-State Gospel Sing will be held Friday through Sunday, June 7-9, at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, which is located on Route 119 between Uniontown and Connellsville. Singing will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and will continue each afternoon and evening throughout the weekend. In addition to the music and singing, there will be food booths and craft tables. Karaoke Star Search will be held Saturday, June 15, at Scottdale Showtime Theater. The showcase will feature a line up of local talent and surrounding area karaoke entertainment. The Hubcaps will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the State Theatre Center for the Arts, 27 E. Main St., Uniontown. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region is sponsoring its second annual oldies concert. Classic Cruisers Unlimited and The Road Kings will sponsor a car cruise before the concert next to the theater. Proceeds from the event will support Big Brothers Big Sisters programs in the Fayette and Westmoreland County area, which include matching children ages 7 through 14 from single-parent families with adult volunteers and also provide local elementary school children with high school and college mentors. The Greater Uniontown Children’s Choir will present its annual spring concert on Saturday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Uniontown. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets will be available prior to the concert at the Dunbar Street entrance of the church. The choir is under the direction of Marsha R. Brady of Connellsville. Kelley Bell is the accompanist for the group. The choir consists of 15 students from the Fayette County area. The students range in age from 9 to 15. The choir will perform a variety of music from classical to secular. The choir traveled to Baltimore in April to attend the Children’s Chorus of Maryland Choir Festival at Goucher College. More than 15 choirs from three states attended.
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will return to Fayette County at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, offering a benefit musical performance entitled, “A Patriotic Summer’s Night Concert” at the Laurel Highlands High School auditorium in Uniontown. Immediately following the concert, there will be a complimentary old-fashioned ice cream social featuring local entertainment. The Flatiron Building in Brownsville houses two museums. The Heritage Center tells the story of the two major eras of history relating to the making of America. The Westward Expansion (National Road era) and the Coal, Coke, River and Railroad (Industrial era) offer changing exhibits every two months. For more information, call 724-785-9331. The Frank L. Melega Art Museum located in the upper level of the historic Flatiron Building offers Melega’s original art of many mediums focusing on the industries of the area. The Center in the Woods in California will offer Special Summer Expanding Horizons 2002 classes for people of all ages from June 17 through Aug. 23. These learning opportunities are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening, depending on the class at various registration costs. The book, “Point Marion … From the Beginning,” is currently for sale. The 490-page volume that includes the genealogy and history of the area begins with the Indians and ends with the year 1999. It details not only the borough of Point Marion, but also the surrounding area because Point Marion was once located within the boundaries of Springhill Township in the former state of Virginia. The “Carpathian Cookery” cookbook, now in its 10th printing, is again available for sale. The Apple Hill Playhouse in Delmont recently announced its 2002 summer schedule, which offers dramas as well as comedies. This season’s highlights include the male and female versions of “The Odd Couple,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Taffetas” and “Picnic.” Apple Hill Playhouse is a restored barn that has been converted to a 175-seat performance space. St. Vincent Theatre will present three productions during the upcoming summer season, the 34th for the professional theater produced by the Rev. Thomas W. Devereux, OSB, and directed by Joseph Reilly. The schedule includes “Beau Jest,” which will be performed May 30 to June 22; “The Senior Circuit” from June 27 to July 20; and “The Murder Room,” July 25 to Aug. 18. The Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival announces the Youth Art Contest and the Youth Poetry & Short Story Contest for 2002 will be held during the 28th annual festival, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 4-7 at Twin Lakes Park in Latrobe. The theme for this year’s art contest is “Heroes.” Participants can submit artwork of the women or men who have made a difference in their life. The Andy Warhol Museum announced revised dates for the 2002 summer exhibitions. “The LP Show,” which will be on view June 23 through Aug. 18 on the museum’s seventh floor. “Off Guard: The Photographs of Ron Galella” will be on view June 23 through Sept. 1 on the museum’s sixth floor. “The LP Show” will feature more than 2,000 LP covers that have been taken from 50 collections. Ron Galella, who has been photographing fame for more than 30 years, is America’s original paparazzi photographer. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday. An exhibit entitled “The Human Condition” will be held through Saturday, June 22, at the Greensburg Art Center Gallery, which is located along Todd School Road in Greensburg. The exhibit will feature paintings, drawings and sculpture depicting the physical and emotional aspects of humankind. The Westmoreland County Historical Society will feature an exhibit of frontier art from Houston Art and Frame at Historic Hanna’s Town during its Colonial Court Days celebration on Saturday and Sunday, June 15-16. The exhibit will consist of artwork by local artists John Buxton and Robert Griffing and western artist Lee Teeter. Buxton will be available to discuss his paintings. The 43rd Three Rivers Arts Festival will open Pittsburgh’s summer season with exhibitions that manipulate the natural world, new collaborative projects, new artist market initiatives, visual arts exhibitions, an enlarged family area and a world-class performance schedule. West Overton Museums in Scottdale is now accepting entries for its 2002 Quilter’s Competition entitled “A Southwestern Pennsylvania Exhibition,” which will be held through Sunday, June 30. The show features professional judging and prizes in six quilt catergories, including pieced, applique, other techniques, collaborative, wearable quilting art and challenge quilt contest. The 24th annual Butler Rodeo will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15, at the Butler Farm Show Grounds, which is located on Route 68 about three miles west of Butler.
Events sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association of Oklahoma City, Okla., will include bareback bronc riding, team roping, calf roping, cowgirl’s barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and brahma bull riding.

Compass Inn in Laughlintown is celebrating its 30th anniversary and opened for the summer season. A 90-minute tour of the restored 1799 stagecoach stop includes the restored inn, reconstructed cookhouse, blacksmith shop and barn. All of the buildings are authentically furnished with period pieces. Special weekends are planned throughout the summer, beginning with Children’s Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23. Special hands-on activities will be available for children. Living History days are scheduled for the third weekends in July and August (July 20-21 and Aug. 17-18). History will come alive as skilled craftsmen demonstrate a variety of 18th-century and 19th-century skills and crafts. Washington County Frontier Days will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, at the Hughes Covered Bridge in Amwell Township.
