PSO to present concert to benefit at-risk students in Uniontown

2 min read

Continuing its ongoing commitment to bring great music to every member of the community, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform a special outreach concert benefiting the students served by Communities In Schools. The event is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at the Laurel Highlands High School auditorium.

The musical performance is entitled “A Patriotic Summer’s Night Concert.”

The event marks the ninth year that the entire symphony has traveled to Fayette County. Last year’s concert was widely attended, and this year’s event proves to be equally anticipated by area residents.

PSO assistant conductor Lucus Richman will once again conduct the symphony when they perform “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Victory at Sea” among other selections at the Laurel Highlands High School auditorium.

Other musical selections that will be featured include “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 14,: “Tiger Rag,” “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “Down a Country Lane,” “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” “Porgy and Bess: Selections for Ochestra,” “Selections from The Phantom Menace” and “Washington Post March.”

In keeping with a long-running tradition, immediately following the concert, guests will be treated to a complimentary old-fashioned ice cream social to be held in the outdoor courtyard. Local entertainment will be provided by “The Dutch Treat,” a barbershop quartet, while guests have an opportunity to mingle with the PSO musicians.

Tickets can be purchased at outlets throughout the Fayette County area, including Ellis Music Store, the Lodge at Chalk Hill, Uniontown Mall Customer Service Desk, Youghiogheny Station in Connellsville and the CIS office.

Prices are as follows: patron priority seating, $30; general admission, $12; senior citizen, $10; and student, $5. Tickets can be purchased through the mail by calling Communities In Schools at 7214-437-2540.

All proceeds benefit Communities In Schools, a countywide non-profit organization whose mission is to provide supportive services to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. Last year, Communities In Schools served more than 4,000 at-risk students in grades kindergarten and 12 in all six Fayette County school districts.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a vital part of the city’s heritage for more than 100 years, is under the leadership of music director Mariss Jansons.

The PSO and Jansons made their fourth New York appearance together performing two concerts at Carnegie Hall in March 2001 with concerts in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and at the Pennsylvania State University.
