Fallingwater offers free tours to Fayette County residents today
MILL RUN – Western Pennsylvania Conservancy invites all residents of Fayette County to tour Fallingwater, free of charge, during its annual Fayette County Appreciation Day. Fayette County Appreciation Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
Residents will receive free admission for a regular tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterwork in Mill Run.
In addition, Fallingwater’s caf? will be offer a Thanksgiving lunch special available for purchase, beginning at 11 a.m.
A national historic landmark, this year Fallingwater was voted the best of America’s top 10 favorite historic homes, in Builder Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Survey.
An official project of the Save America’s Treasures program, Fallingwater was designated the Commonwealth Treasure of 2000 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Last year, National Geographic Traveler magazine named Fallingwater one of 50 “Places of a Lifetime.”
A 1991 poll of members of the American Institute of Architects named Fallingwater the best all-time work of American architecture.
“All of us who call western Pennsylvania home can take pride in the fact that one of the most famous houses in the world is in our own backyard,” said Larry Schweiger, president and chief executive officer of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), the non-profit organization entrusted with Fallingwater since 1963.
“We are happy to welcome all of our neighbors who can join us for this very special event,” Schweiger added.
Staff from Fallingwater’s Community Outreach program will present a short slide presentation featuring the local community’s connections to Fallingwater, from the Bear Run community to the old summer camp days and up to the construction of Fallingwater.
As part of our ongoing oral history project, staff will also be on hand to collect memories and stories about Fallingwater’s past from any Fayette County resident whose family member may have helped build this world-famous house or worked for the Kaufmann family during their years of residence at Fallingwater from 1938-63.
