Pioneer Days to kick off with concert
PERRYOPOLIS – Pioneer Days kicks off today in Perryopolis with a concert in Sampey Park, featuring three local bands. Admission cost for the concert is only $3 for adults and children are admitted free. The food pavilion will be open for refreshments.
Saturday’s activities will begin with the big parade at 1 am. with five bands, floats, antique cars, the Scouts, the VFW and various marching groups. After the parade, the festival grounds will be bustling with lots of food, entertainment, tours and battles. Visitors will also have a chance to see participants dressed in Colonial attire. Preparations are in full swing for crafters and Colonial demonstrators.
The George Washington Grist Mill Complex will offer Addy’s Bake Shop, featuring homemade cookies. Other activities will include apple butter, basketweaving, blacksmith, bread baking, butter making, Colonial brooms, surveyor, homemade soap, mapmaker, Native American artifacts display, old-time candy shop, rug hooking, spinning, quilting and quilt show.
A new contest featured this year will be “Foods of Fall and Harvest Display,” where participants can show off their expertise at fresh produce, canned foods, baked goods and preserves. The children will enjoy themselves in the children’s area with pony rides, petting zoo, games and lots of activities.
The battle plan will be discussed on Saturday and Sunday in the new log cabin. Sunday will start with the pancake and sausage breakfast at the pavilion beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until noon. Cost for the breakfast is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and under are admitted free.
The Perry Area Heritage Society sponsors the event each year and many volunteers offer their time.
