West Overton Museums to open for season
SCOTTDALE – The 2003 season will officially open for West Overton Museums in Scottdale at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6. Members of the museum are admitted free.
The museum tour features the video film “Pillars of Fire,” a 20-minute presentation explaining the coal and coke process and the importance of West Overton in the industrialization of the region.
There are guided tours of the 1838 Overholt Homestead, Summer Kitchen-Wash House, Historic Garden and the Springhouse, birthplace of Henry Clay Frick.
Self-guided tours are offered of the Distillery/Grist Mill, Blacksmith Shop, large brick barn, restored Overton Stock Barn with an exhibit of 19th-century farming equipment.
The Carriage House at the site features a restored Mennonite buggy.
Added to this year’s museum tour are the Glass Exhibit, the Antique Toy Exhibit, the Fox Collection and “Dreams of Flight III” Aviation Exhibit.
Also, the tearoom will be utilized this summer, offering refreshments for visitors.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
The museum is closed to the public on Mondays and holiday weekends.
West Overton Museum is located on Route 819 between Scottdale and Mount Pleasant.
