Candlelight tours to continue at Mount Washington Tavern
FARMINGTON – The Mount Washington Tavern is still in its festive attire. The National Park Service and the National Road Heritage Corridor invite the public to enjoy the tavern by candlelight along with cookies and cider and live Christmas music when it reopens after the Christmas holiday on Saturday and Sunday.
The Great Meadows Garden Club of Farmington decorated the 1828 stagecoach tavern with greenery and candles.
“We have had such positive reactions from those who have visited, we decided to extend the program,” said park ranger Carney Rigg. “People get so busy before Christmas that many don’t have the opportunity to enjoy the season. Now that the rush is over, they may be saying, ‘I wish I had stopped.'”
The tavern will remain decorated for the holidays throughout the month of December. It is open daily for tours except today and New Year’s Day.
Friends and travelers can stop by, sample the holiday cookies and relax with some hot mulled cider while learning of traditions of Christmases long past.
Period music completes the setting.
On Saturday, flutist Sasha Renninger of Uniontown High School will play Christmas music from 2 to 4 p.m.
Bagpiper and violinist David Olson of Belle Vernon will play historic music and carols from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Mount Washington Tavern is located on Route 40, one mile west of Farmington.
The National Park Service manages the tavern as part of Fort Necessity National Battlefield.
