Primates to monkey around at Pittsburgh Zoo
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and Rogers Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts will present “Primarily Primates,” a multi-media exposition inspired by the animals found in the Zoo’s Tropical Forest Complex, on Saturday at the zoo. The grand opening of the students’ work in photography, artwork, poetry, prose and interpretive dance begins at 1 p.m. in the Zoo’s Discovery Pavilion.
The presentation includes:
– Seventh and eighth-grade students will display and read works of poetry and prose that depict the lives and emotions of the primates.
– The Dance Department and the creative writing students will combine creative dance movement, structured improvisation and poetry monologues to interpret the movement and emotions of primates from the Tropical Forest Complex.
– Seventh- and eighth-grade students from the Multi-Media Program will display 20 photographs that were created with digital cameras and Adobe 5.5 PhotoShop. This program, unique to Rodgers CAPA, teaches students black and white photography techniques, 35mm and digital camera use, darkroom procedures, animated video, Claymation and technical theater.
– A group of 22 students from the Visual Arts Department will showcase 18 watercolor drawings. During the past 22 years, this department has painted 17 murals, including the animal mural located near the zoo of One Wild Place.
This is the fifth year the Pittsburgh Zoo and Rogers CAPA have partnered to present the works of the school students to the community. Following the grand opening on Saturday, the Rodgers CAPA multimedia exposition will remain on display in the Tropical Forest Complex through the end of March.
