Singers to perform at W&J
WASHINGTON – Mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager and baritone Simon Keenlyside, accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Washington & Jefferson College’s Olin Fine Arts Center as part of the Vilar Distinguished Artist Series. The performance will feature songs by Schubert, Schumann, Cornelius, Wolf and Brahms.
Kirchschlager has emerged as one of today’s most sought after young mezzo-sopranos. An exclusive Sony Classical artist, she has recorded a disc of Bach arias with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, led by Andrea Marcon featuring violinist Giuliano Carmignola.
Her most recent release, “When Night Falls,” a collection of classical and popular lullabies dedicated to her son, won German’s Echo 2000 Music Award for Best Song Recording of the Year.
Dividing her time between Europe, North America and the Far East, Kirchschlager is at home on the stages of the world’s most famous opera houses.
Keenlyside is one of Britain’s most adored and charismatic singers. He was born in London, studied zoology at Cambridge and singing with John Cameron at the royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. For EMI Classics, he has recorded two recital discs featuring works by Schubert and Strauss with Malcolm Martineau, and Des Knaben Wunderhorn under Sir Simon Rattle. In 1995 Simon Keenlyside received the Singer of the Year Award both from the Critics Circle and the Royal Philharmonic Society.
