Penn State Fayette to host King celebration
Penn State Fayette will host the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday and Tuesday in conjunction with the Fayette County NAACP and the Fayette County Commissioners. The theme for this year’s celebration is “A Call for Peace.”
The PinPoints Theatre production “The Meeting,” will be the keynote performance for the celebration. “The Meeting” will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday in Swimmer Hall.
“The Meeting” is a powerful drama about the lives, philosophies and times of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and what might have happened if the two men had met before their untimely deaths. Written by Jeff Stetson, “The Meeting” has received numerous awards and has been produced throughout the United States and Europe.
PinPoints is a musical theater group that takes subjects such as biology, history and math and puts them into theatrical formats that educate and entertain.
Founded in 1975, these performers have received countless awards for artistic excellence. Their contemporary and historic adaptations have been highly acclaimed by the Smithsonian Institution, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and more than 2,000 schools throughout the United States.
The evening will also include musical performances by God’s Choir from St. Paul’s AME Church, vocalist Linda Dean and an official proclamation by the Fayette County Commissioners.
On Tuesday, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee will honor outstanding area African American junior and senior high school students who excel in academics, athletics, community service and the performing arts. A keynote address will be given by Vernon Carraway, a counselor from Penn State University, on this year’s theme.
An academic exercise by area high school students will be held as a panel discussion on the topic, “What can we do collectively or as individuals to bring about peace and harmony in our society?” A special performance by Israel, a youth group from St. Paul’s AME Church, will also be presented.
