‘Classic Valentine’ to offer music for lovers
GREENSBURG – The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra will present “Classic Valentine,” a classical music concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg. Each year, the “Classic Valentine” concert draws on music literature that evokes thoughts and images of love. The concert opens with Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40” and closes with a “Suite from Carmen,” Georges Bizet’s opera.
The middle two works feature Pittsburgh area musicians Thomas Godfrey and Renate Sakins, the principal flutist and oboist respectively of the Westmoreland Symphony.
Tom Godfrey will perform “Poem for Flute and Orchestra” by American composer Charles Griffes, and Renate Sakins will perform “The Flower Clock” by French composer Jean Francaix. Also on the program are four French love pieces by Gabriel Faure, including “Pavanne” and movements from his “Dolly Suite.”
Dr. Carl Iezzi will provide a pre-concert lecture at the Intermission Suite of the Palace Theatre at 7 p.m., which is open to all ticket holders.
Morrie Brand will present “Classical Chatters,” a one-hour presentation of music excerpts and commentary about the concert’s music, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Greensburg-Hempfield Area Library and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Barnes & Noble on Route 30 in Greensburg.
