CALIFORNIA – The much-anticipated arrival of the spring season means the continuance of an intriguing academic experience on the campus of California University. The 14th annual Mon Valley Academic Bowl returns, beginning with the qualifying round on Thursday, March 20.

This qualifying round of competition for high school students in grades nine through 12 will begin at 9:45 a.m. in the auditorium of Cal U’s Morgan Learning Research Center.

There is no admission charge or entry fee for either Mon Valley Academic Bowl rounds (March 20/April 30).

All area high schools are invited to send a team of five students. All competing students will be given a 45-minute written qualifying test based on all areas of academic knowledge.

Lunch is available for competing students and sponsors at the Gold Rush room or Washington Food Court inside the Natali Student Center.

Following a lunch break, all participants return to the center’s auditorium, and the top eight finalists will be announced while the top three individual scores will be recognized.

The eight teams that compiled the top composite scores will return to the Cal U campus on Wednesday, April 30, to compete in the Mon Valley Academic Bowl finals.

The finals will take place at the Performance Center, located on the second floor of the Natali Student Center.

The finals are expected to begin at 8 a.m.

Only those students who participated in the qualifying rounds are eligible for the finals.

This is a single elimination round, and the teams will be bracketed in competition using the game show format of the old Junior High Quiz program.

All academic areas will be represented and each contest will consist of two, 20-question sessions with a five-minute break.

The team compiling the higher score wins and continues in competition toward the championship and possession of the traveling trophy. Individual plaques will be presented to the first and second place teams. Presentations will be made at the completion of the competition.
