College to host beauty pageant
GREENSBURG – For the third year, the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will host the annual statewide Mrs. Pennsylvania Pageant that includes a fashion show and luncheon to raise money for the “Dress for Success” program to help needy women re-enter the workforce. The deadline for entering the May 10 competition is today. Contestants may register by calling the Mrs. Pennsylvania Pageant at 724-930-7427 or by visiting the national Web site at mrsunitedstates.com.
According to pageant director Melanie Patterson, the winner of this competition will receive an “all-expense-paid trip to the national pageant for a week in Las Vegas, a cash prize, official Mrs. Pennsylvania Crown and other prizes.”
Contestants compete in Las Vegas for the Mrs. United States title, and that winner goes on to compete for Mrs. Universe. Last year’s international pageant was in South Africa. Patterson is a former Mrs. Pennsylvania, who went on to win the Mrs. United States title in 1993.
At the May 10 fashion show luncheon on the Pitt-Greensburg campus, contestants will model business suits that will later be given to the “Dress for Success” program. The pageant is held at 8 p.m. that evening in the college’s Ferguson Theater. Both the fashion show luncheon and pageant are open to the public. Tickets are available by calling 724- 930-7427. A Chinese auction will be held in the lobby of the theater during the pageant. Proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network.
The Mrs. United States pageant began in 1986 to pay tribute to the women of this country, who have made significant strides as wife and mother, homemaker and professional.
Former winners have graced the covers of national magazines, hosted infomercials and are spokespersons and models.
Contest judges are selected from a wide array of community and business leaders.
