Uniontown Art Club names sculpture near local library
Her name is Adorabella. Artist Laura DeFazio recently selected a name for the delightful sculpture of a young woman who sits under the trees, reading a book at the Uniontown Public Library. DeFazio made the selection from submissions entered by library patrons. The name means adored beauty.
“We wish to thank all who participated and invite you to stop by the library to meet Adorabella,’ officials for the library and the art club said in a joint press release.
Adorabella is a gift to the community from the Uniontown Art Club, which unveiled the sculpture on Aug. 10, 2002, in conjunction with the art club’s 75th anniversary.
The library is a special place for the Uniontown Art Club. It is where the club hosts its meetings and houses its art collection, acquired through the years by a branch known as the Friends of Art.
The art club asked DeFazio of Charleroi, a professor at California University of Pennsylvania, to create the work.
Christy Fusco, head librarian, said the public has responded well to Adorabella.
“They love her. They really do,’ Fusco said. “In the summer, the kids are sitting on her lap and eating their lunch with her. People stop by to see her all the time.’
With the winter, people have told library staff they should put a coat, hat and gloves on Adorabella.
“People notice her. They drive by to check on her,’ Fusco said. “It’s a real pleasure to see her sitting calmly under the trees. We look out the window all the time, and people are sitting next to her. I think the art club was successful in giving a gift that the community embraced.’
Memorial or honorary bricks are still being sold to help complete Adorabella’s seating area.
