Local students win honors in art, writing contests

4 min read

WAYNESBURG – Local students brought home honors for their schools during the Southwestern Pennsylvania Scholastic Art Awards program, which was held recently at Waynesburg College. The competition was open to all seventh- through 12th-grade students in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties.

This was a juried exhibit, which did not guarantee that entries would be accepted.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Scholastic Art Awards has provided local art students with a competitive arena that was not offered in the past.

Scholastic Art Award exhibits encourage and recognize student achievement in the creative arts. Concurrently, regional sponsors nationwide hold similar events that culminate in a national exhibit and awards program.

No other program in the nation awards more money and scholarships to aspiring artists than the Scholastic Art Awards.

Gold Key winners’ work will travel to New York City this spring to compete on the national level.

The Silver Key and Certificate of Merit awards are an acknowledgement of excellence at the regional level.

Most colleges and art schools nationwide recognize the recipients of these awards as potential scholarship material.

It is also possible that the Gold Key winners could be selected for publication in the Scholastic Art magazine, published in cooperation with the National Gallery of Art and widely used in classrooms nationwide.

Local students from school districts within Fayette County, who won various awards include the following:
