Artisans sought GRANTSVILLE, Md. – Spruce Forest Artisan Village, located on the Old National Road just east of Grantsville, Md., will continue to accept applications for resident space at the village for the upcoming summer season.

This new artisan will work inside the Alta E. Schrock Cabin, a small plank house built in 1930 and moved to Spruce Forest at Penn Alps, where it has served as the studio for numerous artisans throughout the years. The cabin is heated with a small propane wall unit, and the selected artisan will be responsible for propane heating costs in addition to nominal rent ($23 per month).

During the summer season (May 1-Oct 31), every village artisan works five days per week (Monday through Friday), selecting one day of the week as that person’s day off. The hours of business are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and closed on Sundays, except during special events such as the Summer Festival Quilt Show, which will be held July 11-13, and the Fine Arts Festival, which is slated for Sept. 13-14.

All works will be juried by the Spruce Forest Artisans’ Guild with the final decision projected in the very near future. The decision-making process includes jurying, verification of references and possible in-person interviews for the final candidates.

“We’re eager to pursue this search to find just that right person who can complement the other eight artisans on campus, as well as one who can take this opportunity to start a new business with very little overhead,” said village administrator Trish Morgan. “This is a wonderful chance for an artisan to showcase his or her talent while sharing the traditions of craftsmanship with thousands of visitors who travel to Spruce Forest and Grantsville each year.”

Applications and samples of work will continue to be accepted by calling Morgan, weekdays at 301-895-3332. Appointments will be scheduled for delivery of work samples for jurying.
