‘Nunsense’ to open recital series for Asbury Theatre Guild on Oct. 3

2 min read

The Asbury Theatre Guild’s production of Dan Goggin’s musical comedy, “Nunsense,” will open on Friday, Oct. 3, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Uniontown. The show has often been referred to as the little off-Broadway show with the big, happy Broadway musical score.

Goggin’s music and lyrics capture the fun-loving side of being a nun – namely that of one of the Little Sisters of Hoboken.

From the opening number, “Nunsense is Habit-Forming” to the rousing Sunday-go-to-meeting gospel treat, Holier Than Thou,” which ends the show, Goggin manages to create a musical image of nuns that is refreshing and entertaining.

Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices, played by Melissa Coles teaches Sister Mary Leo portrayed by Mandy Wilson a humorous lesson in humility in the song “The Biggest Ain’t the Best.”

The Mother Superior Sister Mary Regina played by Nancy Kalasky reminisces about her circus days in the splashy number, “Turn Up the Spotlight.” Star-struck Sister Robert Anne played by Barb Baysinger shows her love for the stage in “I Just Want to be a Star.”

Poor befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia portrayed by Barb Cramer regains her lost memory as she sings her country version of “I Could Have Gone to Nashville.”

“Nunsense” will be accompanied by a five-piece combo, consisting of Gail Carlins, music director, on piano; Paul Cramer on synthesizer; Dane Shultz on reeds; and Jason King on percussion.

Technical director is Alex Debsky assisted by Cathy Petrucci, box office manager. Choreography is by Ginny Tanner, and costumers are under the supervision of Tammy Wilson. David Fox, stage manager, is also in charge of properties with the assistance of Barb Holland. The house manager is Brandon Petrucci. Bill Dreucci serves as the producer/director and stage designer.

“Nunsense” is the first event of the 2003-04 season of the Asbury Festival Recital Series and will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Oct. 3-5.

Tickets may be purchased at the Fayette Area Chamber of Commerce offices, Judy’s Do Re Me Music Shop, Cramer’s Performing Arts Studio and Ellis Music Store, all in Uniontown, Amend’s Jewelry in the Uniontown Mall and at the White Picket Fence in Hopwood. A student ticket is offered, as well as group rates for 10 or more. To obtain a group discount, call 724-557-1119.
