Memorial art exhibit honors recently deceased WCCC student
YOUNGWOOD — To honor Janessa JoAnn Fleming of Indiana, a Westmoreland County Community College art student who was killed in a Nov. 15 car accident, the WCCC art department will hold a memorial exhibition at the Science Hall Art Gallery.
“The Sound of Color, A Memorial Tribute to Janessa JoAnn Fleming” will feature the artwork Fleming created for her capstone exhibition, required for the associate degree in fine arts, which she would have completed in this month.
“We wanted to hold that exhibition for Janessa, her family and the students and faculty who knew her and worked with her,” said Christine Kocevar, part-time art instructor and WCCC Art Gallery manager.
“JJ was so excited for her capstone exhibition,” said associate professor of art Kathy Mendus Dlugos.
“I think it will help her family and her WCCC family through the grieving process.”
“We are immensely saddened by this tragedy and the loss of JJ,” Dlugos said.
In honor of Fleming, who was deaf, Dlugos has established a scholarship for WCCC associate of arts students with special needs.
Donations may be made to the Janessa JoAnn Fleming Scholarship c/o WCCC Education Foundation, 145 Pavilion Lane, Youngwood, PA 15697 or by calling Debra Woods, executive director, at 724-925-4083.
The Fleming exhibition will continue through Wednesday. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
