Denver native Ryan K. Witt will make his debut with the Saint Vincent Summer Theatre in the role of Frankie in the Christmas musical, Plaid Tidings by Stuart Ross. A Christmas Lessons and Carols service is open to the public at 7 p.m. today at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Uniontown. The program features Trinity’s Chancel Choir and local Uniontown choirs. The choirs will be directed by guest conductor Tyler Canonico. Bluegrass favorites “The Weedrags” with opener Catherine Zisk, will perform at 8p.m. today at Jozart Center for the Arts in California. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The performance is BYOB for those over 21 with proper ID. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales benefits the non-profit center’s operational expenses. Rockin’ for the Rockaways, a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, will be held at 4:30 and 10 p.m. Sunday at Pizon’s Place in Smock. This event is suitable for ages 18 and over. Announcing the 2013 Mildred A. Gardner Scholarship Award Competition, presented by the Friday Evening Music Club of Greensburg. The FEMC is a group of local music teachers and performers who meet once a month to perform solo and chamber music recitals. FEMC supports music studies of area young people by offering a $1,000 scholarship award for high school seniors who plan on majoring in music at an accredited college or university. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must reside in either Westmoreland or Fayette Counties. Eligible students must submit a recorded audition and application by Feb. 7. Finalists will audition in person on March 2 at the Performing Arts Center of Seton Hill University in Greensburg. The winner will be invited to perform at a FEMC monthly recital at Pitt-Greensburg’s Campana Chapel. Decked out in the grandeur of the holiday season, six historic homes on Brownsville’s Northside will be open for guided walking tours tomorrow and Sunday. Proceeds from the two-day event will seed a fund earmarked for the acquisition of pole banners for Market Street/Route 40. The guided tours will begin at Brownsville Volunteer Fire Co. 1, 520 Market St., where light refreshments will be served after the tour. Tickets will go on sale 30 minutes prior to the start of the tours. There is only one start time each day, with tomorrow’s tour getting under way promptly at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s at 1 p.m. Homeowners will welcome each tour group and be available to answer questions about their restorations during the 20-minute stop at each property. Tours will last approximately three hours.

The Greene County Department of Recreation will ring in the New Year with the fifth-annual “All Night Skate,” beginning at 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, at Mon View Roller Rink in Greensboro. The skate will last until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1. The event is intended for children and teens 17 and younger. There is a fee for admission. Parents or guardians dropping off children must complete and sign consent forms and waivers before leaving. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult during the skate. Planned activities include an Xbox-based dance competition, games and prizes, and hot dogs and sauerkraut at midnight.
