Make tracks to Locomotion Weekend at Carnegie Science Center
PITTSBURGH — Locomotion Weekend at Carnegie Science Center features dozens of model train layouts, rail-related exhibits, and hands-on activities for train enthusiasts of all ages tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Our building-wide train extravaganza promises fun for the whole family,” said Patty Rogers, curator of historic exhibits at the Science Center.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own model trains for a free check-up at the “Loco Doctor” table, which will be staffed by members of the Train Collectors Association-Fort Pitt Division and columnist Joe Mania of Classic Toy Trains magazine.
The check-up includes basic repairs, routine cleaning and oiling.
Representatives from the Duquesne Incline, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, and Scenic Express, among others, will provide demonstration tables and activities.
The Train Collectors Association’s Kids Club will offer interactive train layouts designed for little engineers.
Operating train layouts, provided by rail-related organizations including the Keystone Division of the National Model Railroad Association, the Fort Pitt Hi-Railers and the South Hills Model Railroad Club, will be on display throughout the building.
Visitors also will have a chance to explore the Miniature Railroad & Village and see this year’s newest additions — a replica of the original scoreboard and flagpole at Forbes Field, the barn at Manchester-Farms and hundreds of miniature lights at Luna Park.
Locomotion Weekend activities are free with general admission to the Science Center.
For an extra fee, visitors can purchase tickets to see the documentary Rocky Mountain Express and the holiday classic Polar Express at the Rangos Omnimax Theater.
