The Fayette County Historical Society is currently holding an exhibit as part of a “Made in Fayette, its Decorative and Utilitarian Pottery” series featuring rare works. The exhibit is held at Abel Colley Tavern and Museum along Route 40 in Menallen Township and will be on display during October.
In honor of their 35th anniversary, the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh opened three new exhibitions: Chiharu Shiota: Trace of Memory will take the form of an eight-room installation in their new gallery space at 516 Sampsonia Way. An exhibition of two rarely seen Japanese collections will be on display in Gallery One at the Carnegie Museum of Art, 4440 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh. With works from the early years of Carnegie Institute (now Museums of Art and Natural History), “Japan Is the Key…”: Collecting Prints and Ivories, 1900-1920 traces the development of these collections through the two larger-than-life men responsible for Carnegie Institute’s ambitious exhibitions of Japanese art in the first decade of the 20th century. Area students in grades 7-12 are invited to join the 304 Photo Club, which will meet twice monthly at Monongalia Arts Center, 101 High St., Morgantown, W.Va. Meetings will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. every other Tuesday. Students taking part in the club, hosted by local photographer David Smith, will learn the basics of digital photography, lighting and composition, as well as more advanced techniques. The Senator John Heinz History Center will host the first-ever retrospective of Pittsburgh native Burton Morris’ career as an internationally recognized pop artist as part of the new exhibition, Poptastic! The Art of Burton Morris. The 3,000-square-foot exhibition features more than 100 works of art including early art and drawings from Morris’ childhood, signature painted works, product lines such as his Pittsburgh ties, sculptural work and interactive works of art developed in conjunction with the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University.
