‘Tis the season for all things spooky.

So it’s fitting that the next movie in the State Theatre Center for the Arts classic film series lineup is “Silence of the Lambs” set to take the screen 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Oct. 4.

The 1991 thriller-suspense film stars Jodie Foster who plays young F.B.I cadet Clarice Starling who must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, to receive his help with catching another serial killer, Buffalo Bill, who skins his victims.

“Silence” is the second in this season’s classic film series which is supported by the Herald-Standard, Buy Local Program and the Downtown Business District Association along with the theater to create an event around each of the two viewings of the monthly movie.

Events surrounding this month’s film at the State Theatre in keeping with the horror fashion of the movie will be Bloody Mary specials with each movie ticket as well as a nightly dinner specials at Rizz’s on West Main Street. Duda’s Farm will have a display in the lobby and will feature fall’s finest offerings, including pumpkins, corn stalks and handouts of fall events.

And to delight moviegoers who enjoy a little extra fear, creepy greeters will be on hand before each showing.

Contests are now part of each movie in the classic film series , and this month’s chance to win $100 at each viewing from the Herald-Standard and the Buy Local Program will be a game involving lotions in a basket. The contest correlates with a scene in the movie where the character Buffalo Bill is holding a woman hostage in his basement and passes a basket full of lotions to her, ordering her to apply the lotion because he intends to remove her skin and use it to make a dress.

While “Silence” was wildly popular all over the world at it’s release just over two decades ago, moviegoers to the State should watch for a scene filmed right here in Fayette County. The scene featuring the exterior of Gumb’s house was filmed in Layton in Perry Township.
