At the movies

An action sequel (“The Expendables 3”), a fantasy drama (“The Giver”) and a broad comedy (“Let’s Be Cops”) are among the titles arriving for this third weekend of August.
The films (with all dates subject to change) include:
“The Expendables 3,” with Sylvester Stallone leading another group of hard-hitting action stars against lethal forces of evil funded by an old enemy (played by Mel Gibson). Those along for this PG-13 big-screen mission include Harrison Ford, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Randy Couture, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren and Kelsey Grammer. Stallone co-wrote the script and Patrick Hughes (“Red Hill”) directed.
“Finding Fela!,” a documentary on the life and music of the late Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, an activist with political impact. Paul McCartney and Roots bandleader Questlove were Fela fans. Alex Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side”) directed the unrated work.
“A Five Star Life,” with Margherita Buy in an unrated tale about a single career woman who has a dream job reviewing luxury hotels, but after her sister has personal problems, she wants a less glamorous life with more down-to-earth events. Maria Sole Tognazzi directed.
“The Giver,” with Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift and Brenton Thwaites in a fantasy in which the world is a perfect place with no war, sickness or despair, but a young man learns all about reality from the title character, a being who reveals painful truths about the real world. The PG-13 picture is based on the 1993 book by Lois Lowry. Phillip Noyce (“Salt”) directed.
“Jake Squared,” with Elias Koteas, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Virginia Madsen, Jane Seymour and Bucks County actor Mike Vogel in an R-rated comedy drama about a filmmaker who starts to make a movie about himself and then his life begins to speed out of control. Howard Goldberg (“Eden”) directed.
“Land Ho!,” with Earl Lynn Nelson and Paul Eenhoorn in an R-rated import about a pair of former brothers-in-law who embark on a road trip through Iceland. They hope the trip will be filled with nightclubs, spas and campsites. Aaron Katz and Martha Stephens co-directed.
“Let’s Be Cops,” with Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson in a broad R-rated comedy about two buddies who dress as police officers for a costume party and then try to get laughs by pretending to be actual lawmen. That misguided idea proves potentially deadly when they attract the attention of lethal mobsters and crooked officers. Luke Greenfield (“The Girl Next Door”) directed.
“Rich Hill,” with Andrew Droz Palermo and Tracy Droz Tragos co-directing an unrated documentary on three boys living in an impoverished Midwestern town and the fragile family bond that connects them.
Now in theaters
“Deepsea Challenge 3-D,” with James Cameron in a PG-rated documentary about the Oscar-winning director’s quest to be in a small underwater craft that can go 36,000 feet below sea level. John Bruno, Andrew Wight and Ray Quint directed the 90-minute work.
