Adventure reigns as the State Theatre Center for the Arts opens its 2014-15 Classic Film Series with “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 12.

“Raiders,” the first in the fantasy, action, adventure Indiana Jones series, is a fan favorite and not to be missed on the big screen.

Renowned archeologist and expert in the occult, Dr. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), is hired by the U.S. Government to find the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to still hold the Ten Commandments. Unfortunately, agents of Hitler are also after the Ark. Indy, and his ex-flame Marion (Karen Allen), escape from various close scrapes in a quest that takes them from Nepal to Cairo. Also starring Paul Freeman, Wolf Kahlen, Ronald Lacey, John Rhys-Davies and Denholm Elliot.

Written by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 1981 and became the year’s top-grossing film. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, and won for Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and a fifth Oscar Special Achievement Award for Sound Effects Editing.

The movie is the first in this season’s series, which is supported by the Herald-Standard, Buy Local Program and the Downtown Business District Association, along with the theater, to create an event around each of the two viewings of the monthly movie.

For the September movie, Cafe 45 and War Eagle Rations, will serve up food for purchase in the lobby of the theater. Owner Roger Clatterbuck promises food with a Mediterranean flair reminiscent of Indiana Jones’ journey through the streets of Cairo, including dates, which is a tip of the hat to the “bad dates” line delivered by Sallah in the “Raiders” movie.

Every month during the classic film series movies, Buy Local and the Herald-Standard offer a movie-themed game with chances to win prizes.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children.

The films in this season’s series will be “Scream,” (Oct. 31), “Full Metal Jacket” (Nov. 7), “White Christmas” (Dec. 19), “Beach Blanket Bingo” (Jan. 16), “Moonstruck” (Feb. 13), “The Quiet Man” (March 13), “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” (April 10), “South Pacific” (May 15), “Father of the Bride” (June 19), “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (July 17) and “Dirty Dancing” (Aug. 14).
